In the wake of the present water crisis in Bengaluru , many Apartment complexes are trying their best to harvest as much rainwater as possible. This is one such Apartment called Woodwinds located off Bannerghatta Road where we recently installed the rainwater harvesting unit. The Apartment Complex has a catchment of about 1300 Square meters. That means the Apartment harvests about 1000 Kilo Liters of water every year. The design consists of a first rain separator to flush out the first few minutes of water . The overflow from first rain separator passes to the sedimentation tank of 2000 liters . The water stored in the sedimentation tank is used for secondary purposes like car washing and gardening . The overflow from the sedimentation tank is filtered using a sand filter consisting of silex, pebbles and activated carbon. The Filtered water is stored in the sump to be used for all purposes. The Sump overflow goes in for ground water recharge.
