Turning Rain into Resource – Bangalore's Water Wisdom

update image

The rains have been bountiful this year in Bangalore.

While much of the news focuses on flooding and road damage, there’s another side to the story — those who have harvested and recharged the rain are truly grateful. The rainwater harvest is a super bumper this year .

Bengaluru’s or Bangalore's unique hard rock geology, interspersed with weathered and fractured zones, makes it highly conducive for rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge. In many belts, aquifers lie at shallow depths — an opportunity waiting to be tapped.

"Every rooftop can become a water source". The runoff from terraces can be filtered through a simple sand–gravel or pressure filter and stored for direct use. The excess water can be directed into recharge wells, which can also serve as withdrawal wells during dry months — a natural, low-cost storage beneath our feet.

Similarly, road and surface runoff can be intercepted using shallow drains or recharge pits and guided into recharge wells, helping mitigate flooding while replenishing groundwater.

If we learn to manage rainwater efficiently and treat it with respect, Bengaluru need not face any water crisis.
The solution may lie in rethinking water management — shifting from centralized dependence to decentralized systems.

Water is not really scarce — perhaps we will have to revision it's management and
